Early spring this year

“Everything” is sprouting and leafing early due to the early warm conditions.  Some of the plants are 2-3 weeks earlier than usual.  The bulb seeds planted last year came up very early, with Brodiaea sprouting in November.

In January, Delphinium menziesii and Geum had seeds sprouting in 3″ planter pots, so I put a plastic baggie over them in case of frost.  Unfortunately the Delphinium sprouts didn’t make it.

The Collomia grandiflora, Plectritis congesta, and Wild blue flax (Linum perenne) potted seedlings continued to do well under plastic, the Collomia is about 1″ tall.   They are also sprouting in the yard, but fewer; and no definite P. congesta sprouted in the yard.

Also in January, a bunch of Lupine seeds came up in the lower yard meadow for some reason.  I didn’t plant them last year, but did plant several different kinds the year before, when none of them came up!  A couple of them were damaged by frost in December but the newer ones are OK, about 10-12 of them.  We’ll see.
