The Mallard ducks have shown up, on the vernal equinox, March 20. They look like they’re getting pretty comfortable and don’tmind us walking by, soon we’ll find them hanging out on the hot tub cover. The place has been pruned and cleared of much brush, hopefully they won’t be foolish and try to lay eggs.
Fawn Lily seeds are germinating, there are about 20 of them. This is the first time that they have successfully germinated, either from the seed sales or from the plants. Most of the plants are coming up, too.
I’ve had to transplant around a few plants, including about half of what we think is Hooker’s onion, sets of bulb seedling, and one of the White Aquilegias, because the moles were going after them. The older bulbs and other established plants are good mole protection because of the roots, either deep ones like Camas and Chocolate lily, or extensive packed roots.
