Mole season

Apparently this is now birthing season for the northwest mole, Scapanus townsendii, and new superficial sidetunnels (and mounds) are expected in the spring for the expanding family. They have their favored spots in the yard, and I’ve already transplanted out a small patch of garden that i bordered with stones, called “mole hill”. I think I’ll get an official garden marker for it.

Below is the northwestern “Alligator Lizard”, out for some fresh air, February 7. The lizards actually only get about 6-8 inches long, head to tail (which also breaks off when grabbed by a predator). He’s been out by the rock wall we call Mr Lizard’s Place, rain or shine. He let me pet him today, probably because he was cold, so he’s vulnerable to predators. I harrassed him until he went into safe hiding.

  1. The moles have made an appearance in my lawn. I warned them and told them it was the 4th of July and let off 5 bottle rockets and 2 sparklers in the tunnel. I’m not sure if the whistle or the sulphur sent them away but they have made a guest appearance in the neighbors yard now.

    1. Very Caddy-shack-esque! I cant even post some of my ideas, they’re probably illegal! I use stones to protect my new plants, but dont have much advice for lawns.
